Week in Review: October 17-21

This week in language arts, we are continuing our study of poetry and have written (or at least begun) three different kinds of poems. We have tried our hand at free verse poems, narrative poems, and a "six room" poem where students used lots of imagery to describe a scene. We've also enjoyed reading lots of humorous poems at the end of the week.

Noticing features of lyrical poetry

In math, we are focusing on multiplication, particularly our 2, 4 and 8 facts. Ask your child about doubling as a strategy and how it can help them with all three sets of facts.

For social studies, we have been talking a lot about empathy, which is our school-wide character trait for the month of October. We also began to delve into our PBL (Project-Based Learning) topic for the year, which is recycling. We watched a video called "Plastic Planet" and students reflected on how it made them feel and what the author's message was. If you are interested in watching it as well, you can find it online here.

Science this week was full of investigations. From learning about sound energy with glasses of water...

to discovering what a radiometer is used for...

to a demonstration of how molecules move faster in heat...which I forgot to take photos of. Ask your child about the food coloring experiment.

And what better way to wrap up the week in science than by making s'mores in our solar ovens! Students built their ovens on Thursday and we enjoyed a tasty snack at the end of the day on Friday. We will review these forms of energy next week and have an assessment to end the unit.

Have a wonderful weekend!
