Week in Review: October 10-14

We fit a lot of learning into this short 4 day week! In language arts, we began new unit on poetry and are discussing the different types of poetry and the features that make poetry so unique. Students tried their hands at writing their own free verse poems on Friday, and we will write several more in the next couple of weeks.

In math, we are learning various models we can use to represent multiplication, and to help us solve more complex multiplication word problems. We also set up our Think Through Math accounts on Friday and spent some time on that program, as well as IXL. Remember, these can both be accessed at home if you want your child to have some extra math practice.

Building arrays with linking cubes and recording the multiplication fact they represent

In science, as we study types of energy, we have gone on an energy scavenger hunt around the school, observed different objects at a series of stations, and worked through some new vocabulary terms with Touch and Talk and a vocabulary sort.

In social studies, we have talked about the voting process and our upcoming presidential election using a recent Scholastic News issue. We are beginning to delve into the branches of government and will continue with that next week.

On Friday, we had a fun E-SLOT time. Students chose between two challenges: create a bridge to span one foot out of 25 craft sticks and 3 feet of tape OR create the tallest structure you can with just straws and pipe cleaners.

The strongest bridge!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
