Week in Review: October 30 - November 3

This week in language arts, we have wrapped up our unit on poetry, and will be moving onto expository text next week. In writing, students used different poems as inspiration to try to incorporate various poetic devices in their own poems. They learned about similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, synonyms and more! On another day, students worked in groups to create a "found poem." They wrote descriptive paragraphs about a photograph, then created a poem using only selected words from each student's paragraph. They turned out great, and are posted on the bulletin board outside our room.

Students also enjoyed a visualization project where they took photos to represent stanzas of some humorous poems. You can see their work below!

In math, we are almost done with our unit on multiplication. We worked on a review on Friday, which they will take home to study over the weekend, and we will have a test on Monday. We have been continuing to review fraction concepts they learned in second grade, and will officially begin our fraction unit next week.

Learning to double to multiply by 2, and double-double to multiply by 4

Using pattern blocks to learn about fractions.

We are combining social studies and science this week by studying maps and earth's landforms. This study of landforms will move into a study of changes to the earth's surface next week, such as earthquakes and volcanoes. After learning about the various landforms, students showed off their knowledge by labeling a blank map of the United States with things like major rivers, lakes, mountain ranges and oceans, to name just a few.

The next two weeks before Thanksgiving break are sure to fly by! We have an author visit on Monday, and our Veterans Day Assembly on Friday. We will also get to preview the book fair on Friday, before shopping begins the following week. Have a wonderful weekend!
