Week in Review: August 29 - September 2

It's been a great first full week in third grade!

In language arts, we wrote "Friend Wanted" advertisements, and I hope to have those posted on a bulletin board in our common area early next week. We also spent lots of time brainstorming different writing topics we can use this year. We are learning different strategies in reading such as monitoring our comprehension and making connections to the text. We are also increasing our reading stamina each day. Students are usually allowed to "read around the room" and they are enjoying trying out different places to read. The students were so excited to have our school library orientation and be able to check out up to 4 books! And finally, we had a few remaining students share this book boxes so we could get to know them a little more.

Recording our thinking on sticky notes.

Library orientation with an interactive quiz!

This bulletin board helps us track all of the books that we read together as a class. Fourteen books so far in just the first 2 weeks of school!

Math time has been spent reviewing place value learned in third grade and focusing on different types of graphs such as bar graphs and dot plots. We wrapped up the week by playing some addition review games.

Using cuisenaire rods to build faces with a value of 11.

Warm-ups with the dry erase boards!

Recording long jump data to represent on a dot plot.

Math games to review addition skills.

In science, we studied science safety, common tools we will use, and different science careers. Each student is creating their own Google Drawing poster representing a specific career.

Researching science careers.

Working on career posters in science.

For social studies, we are continuing to learn about the concept of growth mindset, in which students believe they can learn anything they set their mind to! Students read a picture book in a small group, and then collaborated on posters in Google Drawing to share what they learned from the books. We will be finishing these up early next week.

Probably most importantly this week, we finalized our classroom social contract. This is a document that explains how we all expect to be treated and to treat each other. I know we are going to have a wonderful third grade year with everyone following our social contract! Remember, there is no school on Monday, so enjoy your 3 day weekend.
