Week in Review: May 9-13

After STAAR testing on Monday and Tuesday, the rest of the week seemed to fly by. We are working on persuasive reading and writing in language arts. For our final unit in math, we are learning the standard algorithm for addition, and subtraction will be next week.

We finally finished our timeline and titled it "Our Growing and Changing Nation." It is nearly 31 feet long and the kids are so proud of it! Be sure to check it out next time you are in the classroom.

And in science, we are beginning to study force, motion, gravity, and magnetism. We learned about gravity on Thursday with an army man parachute experience, and on Friday, we studied force and motion with slingshots and toy cars. It was a fun way to wrap up the week, and I hope your child enjoyed it, as well as learned from it.

We also took some time to choose our unique country name for next Friday's field day. Because I have an owl theme in my classroom, the class voted on Owlympia. On Friday, each student created a flag design and we voted on our class favorite (congratulations to Ari, his design won!), which will be recreated on fabric for our country flag to carry around during field day.

Only thirteen days of school left! When we are down to 10 days, we will begin the official classroom countdown with a special surprise each day. I hope everyone has a great weekend, and don't forget to mark your calendars for Spotlight Night on Thursday May 19 from 6-7:30pm.

Week in Review: May 2-6

This week has been one final push to be ready for the STAAR test. Lots of review in both reading and math! I tried to keep it fun with partner work, scoot challenges, vocabulary bingo, and even two Jeopardy battles. We relaxed for the last hour on Friday after recess by reading around the room. I hope they all had a fun week and feel prepared for next week.

Math scoot review in the common area!

IXL to practice math skills

Scavenger Hunt in Scholastic News looking for non-fiction text features!

And the Exterminators won first place! Congratulations!

Vocabulary Bingo!

One final round of Jeopardy on Friday after reading a great picture book!

We made it to Friday afternoon...reading around the room to cool down after a HOT recess!

We also continued to work on our timeline for social studies and it is coming together beautifully. Every student has had a part in creating it, and they are learning so much! We will find a place to display it after the tests next week.

I hope you all have a fun and restful weekend! Please be sure to read the STAAR reminders email I sent earlier on Friday...it contains lots of tips to make Monday and Tuesday go smoothly for your child.
