We have done some fun team-building activities like Saving Fred in our own class....
The toothpick challenge with Mrs. Swyers' class...
And cup games with Mrs. Lilleboe's class.
In math, we spent one day exploring math tools and brainstorming how they can be used. We have also been reviewing types of graphs, and learning that people are not born with or without a "math brain". You develop your math brain by doing math! This led to a discussion about growth mindset, or the idea that you need to think positively instead of negatively about what you are capable of. For example, instead of saying, "This is impossible!", we should tell ourselves, "This is challenging, but I'm going to keep trying!
In language arts, we discussed what our reading and writing workshops will look like, and explored our classroom library. Students are allowed to choose one book from the classroom library, but it must stay at school. We had the school library orientation on Thursday and students were allowed to check out 4 books, these books can come home, and are due in 2 weeks. Each student also interviewed a reading partner about their favorite kinds of books. On Friday, we decorated our Writing Notebooks, and wrote our first journal entry.
It's been a wonderful week, and I am looking forward to the rest of the year with this class!
