Week in Review: March 19-23

This week in science, students have been exploring ecosystems. We started on Monday by exploring outside of our school to see what living and non-living things we could observe, and discussed their interdependency.

 This study of ecosystems tied in perfectly with our field trip to Westcave Preserve on Tuesday.

In math, students are learning about perimeter through lots of hands-on activities. Next week, we will move onto time and time intervals. 

In language arts, we have continued to work on our slideshow about our PBL research on endangered animals. We also worked on different verb tenses, including past, present and future. On Friday, we spent some time looking over our STAAR ready practice tests and thinking about the questions that we missed and why.

In social studies this week, we learned about the efficiency of an assembly line. We did this by creating our own assembly line to build bookmarks. First, students created one of their own to see how long it would take. Most students took 3-5 minutes to create just one bookmark. Then we formed three assembly lines, and in a matter of 10 minutes, these assembly lines were able to create 14-24 bookmarks!

Week in Review: March 5-9

We've had a busy week during this last week before spring break! As you know, the Economics Fair was on Tuesday, and it was a huge success. Third grade earned over $3,100 that we will donate to an organization that supports endangered animals and protecting their habitats.

Our school held career day on Thursday, and our class got to hear from guest speakers from several careers. We learned from a SWAT officer, a hair stylist, a civil engineer, and someone from the banking industry. It was a wide variety of careers that appealed to everyone!

In science, we have wrapped up our unit on space. Students worked in small groups to research a planet, and then shared that information they learned with the class through either a poster or slideshow presentation. They did a great job and learned a lot, and it showed on their science test scores!

In math, we have continued our study of fractions for 2 weeks. This time, we were focusing on equivalent fractions, and being able to compare fractions. After spring break, we will move onto measurement, which includes perimeter, time intervals, and weight and capacity.

In language arts, we have been busy researching endangered animals and habitat destruction. Our class will be creating an informational slideshow based on this research. I was hoping this would have been done by spring break, but we just began it on Friday, and will continue after spring break.

Remember to have your child wear their 3rd grade t-shirt, and bring a sack lunch as no one ordered a lunch from the cafeteria.
