I apologize for the lack of pictures this week, the days just seemed to fly by and I never had a moment to pause and take photos. This week we have been studying economics in social studies. We were busy preparing for next week's Economics Fair by analyzing advertisements to see how producers convince consumers to buy their particular product. On Friday, students began working on a rough draft of their own advertisement for their unique product. We will work on the final copies in class on Monday!
In language arts, we finished copying the final drafts of poems for our poetry anthology, and next week we will work on illustrating those. We also had a lesson on verb tenses: past, present and future tenses and learned some strategies to use when reading non-fiction texts. I'm constantly encouraging the kids to really interact with what they read...pausing to think and question, and not just rush through the words on the page.
In math, we continued working on area, and learned that width times length of a rectangle is an easy way to calculate it. On Friday, we explored how to find the area of an irregular shape, and how to break into easily manageable pieces. I had hoped to be done with area and perimeter by Friday, but with my son being sick one afternoon and therefore a substitute for math, and then the "ice day" yesterday, we are about 2 days behind. After we wrap up area and perimeter hopefully by Tuesday next week, we will move onto volume. Thanks to everyone who sent in supplies for those hands on activities. If you signed up for something and still have not sent it in, please do so on Monday.
Have a great weekend! Only 5 school days until spring break!
